AbstractThe assessment of the polarimetric coherence information with full polarimetric data was studied using the region classification. The pair of HH and VV bands showed the relevant information of the phase difference among every band pairs, so the HH and VV bands were used to generate the polarimetric coherence data (CoPHH-VV). The Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) complex full polarimetric images were used to obtain the CoPHH-VV and the intensity data. MultiSeg, a hierarchical segmentation algorithm, and the Bhattacharyya distance, a region classifier, were used to segment and classify these images, respectively. The Tapajós National Forest, in the Brazilian Amazon, in Pará State, Brasil, was the study area. Several combinations of the intensity and the polarimetric coherence data were classified. The statistic measures were estimated to compare among these classifications. The results showed the performance improvement of classification of the polarimetric coherence, HV and VV intensities in comparison with the HV and VV intensities classification. The incorporation of HH information in the CoPHH-VV improved in the soya2, degraded forest and the bare soil discrimination, and the soya1 was classified. Therefore, the kappa value of the classification including the polarimetric coherence - CoPHH-VV decreased in relation to the value of the classification using only HH and HV intensities.
